Histories of Marketing in Games
The new issue of Memory Insufficient is out now! My friend Cameron Kunzelman had these kind words to say about it:
"...media studies has a bad habit to wait for history to become history before it works to make it more clear. Memory Insufficient is making a real political intervention in this reifying effect, and I wish we could see more of these smaller edited collections pop up."It's important to me that Memory Insufficient is always getting better at including more voices in that process of 'reification'. I was super happy when Krish Raghav sent in his history of games marketing in Chennai, India. I can't explain how amazing that essay is, you just need to go read it. Likewise, Skot Deeming's feature essay examines the movement of a design strategy from the margins to the centre, by way of a perceived marketing opportunity. Go read them now.
Don’t forget to check out the call for submissions for the next issue. The topic is ecology: what role have games played in the relationship between humans and the environment? I’m hoping that this topic will encourage more recentrings of games history, away from our interests as developers and consumers, and towards our interests as people who are connected to each other and dependent on a complex web of relationships in order to survive.
Also, I’m still waiting for any feedback from educators about how Memory Insufficient could become a more useful teaching resource. Please get in touch by email or using this form.
